Dr. Lisa Hinkelman is a nationally recognized researcher, speaker and author who is a foremost authority on educating and empowering girls and creating environments that foster girls’ confidence, self-esteem and successful decision-making.  She has spent more than ten years researching girls and educating adults both as a professor at The Ohio State University and as the Founder and CEO of the national non-profit Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX), an organization that delivers evidence-based programming, research, education and training focused on the critical issues impacting girls. 

Her research with more than 4,000 girls was published by Corwin Press in the 2013 award-winning book 'Girls Without Limits: Helping Girls Achieve Healthy Relationships, Academic Success and Interpersonal Strength'. Written as a tool for parents, teachers and counselors, 'Girls Without Limits' has won acclaim as a timely and relevant resource that helps adults "get it" by developing a real understanding of what girls think and feel about their daily challenges.  Focused on building self-esteem, enhancing communication, increasing competence and addressing gender stereotypes and barriers, 'Girls Without Limits' is currently being utilized by parents, educators, helping professionals and University professors throughout the country.

In 2017, Hinkelman authored and served as principal investigator of the groundbreaking report, ‘The Girls’ Index: New Insights into the Complex World of Today’s Girls’, the largest national study of-its-kind on teen girls.

As an expert on issues facing girls, Hinkelman has been an invited speaker for several major initiatives, conferences and professional development trainings including: the Ohio Governor’s Institute on Women and Girls, The White House Council on Women and Girls, the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society of Women Engineers, the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland, the Cleveland Catholic Diocese Office of Urban Education and the Indiana Youth Institute Kids Count Conference.  Additionally, Hinkelman conducts ongoing scholarly research presentations at various educational and counseling state and national conferences including: The American School Health Association, The American Counseling Association, The American School Counselor Association, School Social Work Association of America, The Society of Women Engineers, The National Coalition of Girl's Schools and The American Educational Research Association.

Dr. Hinkelman is a graduate of Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she earned her degrees in Psychology and Education. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from The Ohio State University.  Dr. Hinkelman completed training in mental health counseling and school counseling and previously served as a Counselor Education faculty member at The Ohio State University. Her University teaching and scholarly research focused on social and emotional learning, non-academic barriers that impact learning and girls' self-concept development. She has authored numerous academic publications, book chapters, articles and educational curricula and was selected as a Nominated Changemaker for The White House United State of Women and is a Draper, Richards, Kaplan Social Entrepreneur Fellow.
